Building the Business Case for Digital Transformation

Restyn Editorial 8 min read

Getting board approval for a major transformation program requires a business case that's credible, specific, and honest about risk.

Structuring the Case

An effective transformation business case starts with a clear articulation of the problem: what specifically is broken, and what is the cost of not fixing it? The best cases build the benefit case from specific operational improvements that can be validated and tracked — not generic claims about "efficiency" or "competitiveness."

Sequencing and Phasing

Transformation programs that win funding and deliver results are increasingly structured to deliver value incrementally. Building a phased structure into the business case from the start is more persuasive — and more honest — than presenting a single large program with a single large payoff several years away.
