FedRAMP authorization is often described as the key to the federal market. Here's an honest assessment of what it actually requires.
The Authorization Path
Both JAB and Agency Authorization paths require a System Security Plan, independent assessment by an accredited 3PAO, and ongoing continuous monitoring. The process typically takes 12–24 months and costs hundreds of thousands of dollars in assessment fees, staffing, and infrastructure investment.
Whether It's Worth It
For vendors with genuine federal market opportunity, FedRAMP is generally worth the investment — the authorization creates durable competitive advantage and access to a market that is effectively closed without it.
