Headless CMS has gone from niche architecture to mainstream consideration. Here's an honest assessment of when it makes sense for media companies.
What Headless Actually Means
A headless CMS separates content management from content presentation. Instead of a monolithic system, a headless CMS stores and serves content via API — and your development team builds the presentation layer separately. This enables content to be published once and consumed everywhere: website, mobile app, connected TV, digital signage.
The Editorial Experience Trade-off
The most consistent criticism of headless CMS from editorial teams is the loss of real-time visual editing. This is a real usability regression that shouldn't be minimized. Some headless platforms are working to address this with visual editing overlays, but the experience isn't yet equivalent to mature traditional CMSs.
