Modernizing a Legacy Banking Platform Without Breaking the Bank

Restyn Editorial 8 min read

A regional bank needed to modernize its core lending platform without interrupting the operations it ran 24/7.

The Strangler Fig Approach

We implemented a strangler fig modernization: building a new system incrementally around the existing one, routing specific loan types to the new platform as they were ready, while leaving the legacy system running for everything else. This approach allowed us to validate each component in production before moving to the next.

Results

After eighteen months, the majority of loan volume had migrated to the new platform. Digital origination capabilities were live and generating measurable improvement in application completion rates.
