Upgrading to a New Odoo Version: What to Expect and How to Prepare

Odoo releases a new major version roughly every year. For Enterprise customers, staying current unlocks new features, security patches, and official support. But major version upgrades require planning — and the complexity scales with how much you've customized your instance.

Why Upgrading Matters

Odoo S.A. supports Enterprise customers on the current and one prior major version. Once a version ages out of support, you no longer receive bug fixes, security patches, or migration assistance. Staying on an unsupported version isn't just a feature limitation — it's a security and compliance risk.

Beyond support, each new major version of Odoo delivers meaningful improvements. Recent releases have significantly expanded AI-assisted features, improved the accounting localization library, introduced new ecommerce capabilities, and enhanced the Studio no-code customization tool. Organizations that stay current capture these improvements without large catch-up projects.

What Makes Upgrades Complex

Standard Odoo modules upgrade relatively cleanly using Odoo's official upgrade script. The complexity comes from customizations — and nearly every production Odoo instance has them.

  • Custom Python modules. Third-party and bespoke modules written for one version may not be compatible with the next. Each custom module needs to be reviewed, updated, and tested against the new version's API.
  • Custom views and reports. QWeb templates and custom report layouts may require updates if the underlying model or view structure changed between versions.
  • Third-party OCA modules. Community modules from the Odoo Community Association vary in how quickly they're ported to new versions. Popular modules usually have new-version ports available at or shortly after release; niche modules may lag or be abandoned.
  • Data migration. The upgrade script handles schema changes, but complex data transformations — especially in accounting — require careful validation before going live.

A Practical Upgrade Approach

The most effective upgrade process begins 3–4 months before the intended go-live. This allows time for a full cycle of test upgrades, customization updates, and user acceptance testing without the pressure of a looming deadline.

A typical engagement looks like this:

  1. Inventory and assessment. Catalog every custom module, third-party module, and Studio customization in your current instance. Identify which will need work on the new version.
  2. Test upgrade on a staging branch. Run Odoo's official upgrade script on a copy of your production database. Identify what breaks.
  3. Update and test customizations. Port each custom module to the new version's API. Test integration points, workflows, and reports.
  4. User acceptance testing. Have key users run through their critical workflows on the upgraded staging environment. Document and resolve issues.
  5. Production cutover. Run the final upgrade on production during a planned maintenance window, with rollback procedures ready.

The Case for Staying Current

Organizations that upgrade every year — or at most every other year — tend to find the process manageable. Those that skip multiple versions accumulate technical debt, and the catch-up upgrade becomes a significant project that disrupts operations.
